Division of Commercial Fisheries

During recent years (FY 2001-05) the Commercial Fisheries Division of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has received approximately 10-13 million dollars annually of funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for assisting state fisheries research, restoration and development activities statewide. This award funding has been allocated for diverse commercial marine fisheries, including all species of Pacific salmon, king and Tanner crabs, various groundfish, rockfish, sea urchins, scallops, and geoduck clams.

ADF&G federally funded commercial fisheries research is intended to promote, in addition to NOAA award conditions and objectives, the department's core mission to protect, maintain, and improve state fishery resources, and manage their use and development for the maximum benefit of the people of the state, consistent with sustained yield principles. Department services in this respect include providing ample opportunities to utilize fishery resources, ensuring sustainable and harvestable surpluses, and providing accurate information to and involving the public in the management of fishery resources.

The ADF&G Commercial Fisheries Federal Aid Program has compiled the following showcase examples of NOAA funded fishery research projects conducted during FY 2001-05 that were, following completion, judged particularly successful by fishery managers and scientists for meeting the goals and objectives stated in the department’s mission for both state and federally managed fisheries. Some of these individual overviews also include links to supplemental presentations that provide additional project detail.

These project summaries will be augmented with additional project success stories as they become available.

These outstanding research projects were supported through the following multi-year or continuing year NOAA federal assistance awards: Extended Jurisdiction, Nearshore Marine Fisheries Research, Alaska Fisheries Information Network, Norton Sound Fishery Disaster Fund, Yukon River Salmon Negotiation Studies, and U.S./Canada Pacific Salmon Treaty.

Questions or inquiries concerning these federally funded NOAA award projects may be directed to Stephen E. Wright, Federal Aid Coordinator, Division of Commercial Fisheries (907) 465-6121 or e-mailed to stephen.wright@alaska.gov.
