Teacher Credit Workshop Mdash; Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Portage Alaska. Anchorage School District Summer Academy. Break away from the everyday and have a fun learning experience at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage! We will get to know the different ungulate species focusing on Moose or Alces alces and how Anchorage residents engage with moose in their everyday lives. June 3 | Potter Marsh Discovery Day | Anchorage | WHERE: Potter Marsh boardwalk, Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge, 2880 East 154th Ave., located at Mile 117 along the Seward Highway approximately 1/2 mile south of the Rabbit Creek Road exit and across from the Rabbit Creek Shooting Park. DETAILS:11am–4pm. Discover Potter Marsh and some of Alaska's wildlife at Anchorage's most popular wildlife viewing area. This family-friendly event includes nature-related games and prizes, invertebrate sampling, birding stations along the boardwalk, educational animals from the Alaska Zoo, kid-friendly archery range, fishing practice area, release of a rehabilitated wild bird (if available), captive educational birds at nearby Bird TLC facility, artist booths at nearby V Rae Art Studio, and more. Event sponsored by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and other partners. A food vendor will be on site; parking available nearby; restrooms and entire facility are accessible to those in wheelchairs. COST: Free, everyone welcome. June 17 | Reflections Lake Discovery Day | Anchorage | WHERE: Reflections Lake, Palmer Hay Flats State Game Refuge - located at Mile 30.6, 'Knik River Access' exit, along the Glenn Highway. Approximately 32 miles northeast of downtown Anchorage and 11 miles south of downtown Palmer and Wasilla. DETAILS: 12pm–4pm. Help celebrate one of Palmer's popular wildlife viewing areas at this free annual event. At this family-friendly event you can engage with birding stations along the boardwalk, assist ADF&G staff with a fish release, learn more about wildlife safety, participate in hands-on nature activities, go geocaching, watch dog retriever demonstrations, and more! October 7 – 8 | Field to Freezer: Big Game Hunting 101 (Alaskans Afield) | Mat-Su |
Register at Alaskans Afield Saturday, October 7th 10am-2pm at the Northern Lights Elk Ranch and Sunday, October 8th, 2023 from 10am-3pm at the Matanuska Experiment Farm and Extension Center in Palmer. This introductory field course is designed for new and beginner big game hunters. In this two-day course, participants will learn how to efficiently and effectively field dress a big game animal. Day One is hosted at Northern Lights Elk Ranch in Palmer, where participants will work together to gut, skin, and pack out an entire elk. Day Two we will meet at the Matanuska Experiment Farm and Extension Center, where participants will learn how to process the meat, organs, and bones for preservation in the freezer and for canning. This course includes more than eight hours of instruction and participants will receive equal shares of meat, organs, and bones. |
